This article covers the installation of Memory-Map on a new computer or re-installation on an existing computer following a system recovery and/or re-installation of the operating system. If you've recovered or upgraded your computer and/or re-installed Windows, your PC will have taken on a new Hardware Identity so it looks like a totally different/new PC to the Memory-Map registration system.
Your license permits you to install Memory-Map on a certain number of PCs that you own (the limit is typically two PCs or five devices total). If you have not used up all your activation rights, activating another PC is straight forward. If you are using an older computer that has been updated to Windows 10, ensure that you have write access to your Documents folder (eg, ). Simply install the software (and maps, if you have them on DVD). Always install the latest software version from the page before loading the maps from disk. The first time you open a map or use a managed feature, the software will prompt you to Activate the license.
Go ahead and sign in to your account. When prompted, give the PC a unique name, different from a previous incarnation of the same PC. For example 'Home-PC-2'. If the resources are available for activation from your account, go ahead and click Activate. In the menu Help License Management you can see what resources have been activated on this computer. Note: If you have serial number from a DVD package, this is NOT needed for re-installation.
The serial number is only used one time, when you register the serial number into your account. Once a serial number has been registered, the resources are stored in your account, and you only need your user name and password for re-installation. If you have used up all the Activation Rights available in your account, the Activate button is greyed out. However, you can Migrate the Licenses from an old, retired or defunct PC to the new one. Click and sign into your Memory-Map user account in your web browser. Click on History.
At the bottom of the page you will see all the computers and mobile devices that are registered to your account. Take a moment to look at these and decide which one you want to Migrate the licenses from and which is the new computer that you want to Migrate to. Your new computer will probably be the one indicated as 'Recent sign-in'. Click on the name(s) of the machine(s) so you can see what licenses are activated where. Note that the server is on British time so if you are in Australia or NZ, the dates might show as yesterday's date. If you have two machines that have a confusingly similar names, now is a good time to rename them.
Click on the machine name to view the Hardware history, then click Change Name. The part in parentheses saying 'PC/Mac first used on date' is added automatically. Click on the Migrate button and perform the Migration. Keep an eye on the dates to help distinguish between machines of the same name. Then download and open the License File (as prompted) which will automatically install all the licenses on your new computer. If after successful migration you are still being prompted to buy, then take precise note of the title name of the resource you are being prompted to buy.
It’s quite common for users to download the current version of maps from the Digital Map Store, some years after the original purchase, only to discover the maps have been updated. A discounted update fee is sometimes offered which may be as low as $10. Go ahead and click the Buy prompt in the software to find out the price of the latest maps. If you decide to stick with the old edition that you purchased, sign in to you license management account on the web site ( ). Click History.
Your purchased packages are listed under My Packages. Click the name of the package, then click the Get Maps link. If the maps in the package are still available in the digital map store, they are listed with a Download button. If it says 'No Maps Found', it is best to contact tech support. Sometimes we have a zip file of the old maps available in the archives and we can send you a link.
New Computer is shown as Dead When you migrate the license from an old PC to a new one, the old one is marked as 'Dead' in the device listing. These machines cannot be used any more for activation or migrating licenses. If you make a mistake doing a migration, you may find you accidentally migrated licenses away from a machine that is still in use. If this happens, please contact tech support. We can fix the mistake and walk you through the migration process.
License Activating the Software License Certain features of this software, and some of the included maps, may require online activation. If you can connect your computer to the internet, activation is quick and easy. If you cannot connect directly to the internet, see below. When you install the software or maps, you will most likely be prompted to activate it immediately. If you do not complete this step, you will be prompted again each time you open an un-activated map or use an un-activated feature. At any time, you may see the status of all controlled resources by clicking the Help License Management.
Menu command. Note: each software package includes several resources that need to be activated. Before you leave home, you must go to the Help License Management. Dialog, and ensure that you have activated all the maps and software features you need on your expedition. Activation is accomplished by completing four stages:.
Create an account (Once only). Your account is used to manage your all your licenses. When you are installing additional maps or software, and when your are installing on a different PC or Mobile Device, you must always sign in to the same account. You can choose any alpha-numeric combination you like for your user name and password. All spaces and punctuation are ignored, and only the first 16 letters or digits are used.
The case of the letters is also ignored. You must enter a valid email address. This is used to confirm your registration, and is used to recover your account name and password if you forget them. If you have forgotten your user name or password, you can recover them by clicking.
Do not create more than one account!. Give your computer a name. You may install the software and map data (depending on the publisher) on more than one computer, and onto more than one mobile phone or PDA. You may also (if the publisher allows it) move the license from one machine or device to another. To manage all these licenses, it helps if you give each computer or mobile device a name you can recognize. Register the serial number supplied with your purchase. When prompted, enter the serial number, which is printed inside the retail package, or provided electronically with an online purchase.
The serial number consists of 12 digits in four groups of 3 (eg 123.456.789.012). You can register each serial number only once. The resources associated with your purchase are credited to your account. Most packages permit you to use the resources on at least two computers. If you want to use the package on another computer, or on a mobile device, simply sign in to the same account, where your resources are available for activation.
If you have an old-syle serial number (with 4 groups of 4 letters or numbers eg, AB12.CD34.EF56.7890) and you are using a machine that previously had a licensed copy of Memory-Map, your license resources are automatically credited to your new account. Activate the resources you want to use. Once you have signed in to your account and registered your serial number, the resources are activated automatically when they are first used. Once a resource has been activated, it is locked to that computer. However, most packages include resources for at least two computers. You have the flexibility to put resources on the computers where they are needed (for example, you can activate the GPS feature on your laptop, and the Printing feature on your home computer). When you get a new computer, you can migrate all your licenses from your old computer to the new one.
For more detailed, step-by-step instructions, click Activate / Download your chosen area of a map. Some maps are licensed in small square 'chunks', allowing you to easily choose which parts of the map you want to activate. Click the Map menu and see if 'Activate visible map portion' is enabled.

If it is enabled, that means you have to choose which part of the map before you can activate it. First, Scale-out so you can see the areas you are selecting on a small-scale base map. Then click the 'Route' toolbar button and draw a route that outlines the area you want to activate. Finish the route by clicking on your first point, so the route defines an enclosed area.
You can view the Route Properties to see the area enclosed. When you activate the area, all the chunks that overlap your route will be activated, and part of some chunks will lie outside of the route. Therefore, make the route somewhat less than the total area included in the package you have purchased. For example, if your package specifies that you are entitled to 2500 sq km of map, set up your route to enclose, say 2000 sq km. You can always add on more area later to get up to your full entitlement. When you have adjusted the route to your liking, scale in to display the map you want to activate, then right-click on the route, and click Operations - Activate Enclosed Map. If the 'Register or Purchase Your Product' dialog appears while activating the area, it means your account does not contain enough resources to complete the activation.
It tries to activate a row of chunks at a time, so it is likely that you still have a few chunks left to activate a small additional area. If you need to activate more area, click the 'Buy Online' button, and you can select from the available packages of additional chunks.
When adjusting your route to activate more area, don't worry about overlapping with an area you have already activated. It does not try to re-activate a chunk that you have already activated. Also, don't worry about enclosing areas of sea, or other blank areas around the map - you don't have to pay for those.

Mobile Devices (PDAs, Smartphones) Software features and maps must be activated on your PDA or phone. First of all, you have to choose whether to associate the license with a specific Windows Mobile device, or with an SD Card.
Washington State Map Licence
Putting the license on the device allows you to carry multiple sets of maps on different cards, while putting them on the SD Card allows you to easily use the software on any device the card is loaded into. In either case, you can recover the license data if it is accidentally deleted, and you can migrate license to a new card or device when you need to. Activation on SD Card When you activate a license on an SD Card, the license is locked to the card. You can insert the card into any supported mobile device and use the licenses without activating the device itself. Start by inserting the card into the mobile device. Install the software on the mobile device (click the Mobile Device Install menu command in the desktop software), or (if it is already installed) launch the application on the mobile device. Next take the card out of the mobile device and mount it in a card slot (or attached card reader) on your Windows PC.
Verify that you can access the card (under My Computer on your Start menu). Run Memory-Map on the PC, and click the Help License Management menu command. Click the SD Card button. It should open a second License Management dialog for the card. Select the license resources you would like to associate with the card, and click 'Activate'. Activation on Mobile Device There are two ways to activate licenses on a mobile device: by syncing to an internet-connected PC running the Memory-Map desktop software (which is the preferred method), or through a direct internet connection.
Via PC. Start by syncing the mobile device to the PC. Install the software on the device (click the Mobile Device Install menu command in the desktop software). Run Memory-Map on the PC, and click the Help License Management menu command. Click the Mobile Device button.
It should open a second License Management dialog for the device. Select the license resources you would like to associate with the device, and click 'Activate'. Via a direct internet connection If you have a WiFi or cellular internet connection, you can activate additional license resources while you are away from the PC. Just tap the 'Activate' button when prompted after accessing the desired resource. Make sure you sign in to the same account you created on the PC.
You can tap the Help License. Menu command to see the status of your licenses on the device. Activating map chunks on your mobile. If the map you are using requires activation of a selected area, then it is automatically activated on the SD card or Mobile device when you send the area of map to the Mobile.
It usually makes sense to activate the map to the SD card that holds the map data. First initialize the card on your mobile device as above, then insert it into a card reader on your PC. Draw a route enclosing the area you want to put on the card. The route must be closed - ie it finishes on the same waypoint it started on. Right-click on the route and select Operations - Send Enclosed Map to Mobile Device. After a short delay (during which the program may appear to be not responding) you will see the 'Send Map to PDA' dialog.
Select the 'Storage Card on PC' option and browse to the card location. The area is activated and locked to the SD card and the map data is copied to the card. There is no limit on the size of the map you can copy - you can fill up the latest high capacity cards with multiple GB of map. If you want to put the map on a CF card or internal memory of the mobile, then you have to sync your device with the PC, and, in the 'Send Map to PDA' dialog, select 'The Send Map to PDA option' and select the storage area you want the map placed on. In this case the map is locked to the device itself and not to the storage card. If you are away from your PC, but you have an internet connection on your mobile, you can download and activate additional map chunks 'over the air'.
Chunks may be a few hundred kilobytes in size, so ensure you have adequate bandwidth and a data plan that won't charge you an arm and a leg for that amount of data. First zoom in to display the area of map you want to activate. The area when no data is present will appear white - you can use your GPS location, or overlays drawn on a smaller scale map as reference points. Then tap Menu - License - Activate visible map.
When prompted, sign in to your account, using the same user name and password as you use on your PC. The device will go online to fetch the data and activate the map. You can purchase additional area through your mobile as needed. Off-line Activation If the computer on which you want to use the software cannot be connected to the internet, the easiest way to set up your licenses is by copying a file onto the computer. You need to have access to another computer that is online, and a removable media such as a writable CD or flash drive.
Starting on the dis-connected PC (or PDA):. Click Help License Management.
Select a resource, and click Activate. Click Off-line Activation. Make a note of the Hardware ID and Resource ID. Cancel out of that dialog.
Repeat for each resource (Hardware IDs is always the same) Then in the Web browser:. Go to. Sign in to your account (or create an account, if you have not done so). Register the package serial number (if not already done). Click 'Off-line Activation'. Enter the Hardware ID, a name for the computer, and up to 4 Resource IDs.
Click 'Activate'. Ignore the result (if you need to enter the keys manually, you can get them from the Recover License command). If you have more Resource IDs, click the browser's Back button and repeat the process. Click 'Menu', then 'Recover License'. Select the applicable Machine/Device. Click 'Download License file' Put the file on physical media and take it over to the off-line PC or Mobile Device.
Double-click on the License file to install the licenses. Off-line activating map chunks It is not possible to activate a selected area of map off-line. You must have an internet connection to activate an area of the map.
However, once you have activated it, you can then use the map while off-line.
